Educational Attainment, Literacy Skills, Nativity, and Motivation to Learn Among Middle-Aged Adults in the United States

Research on factors associated with motivation to learn (MtL) is limited, particularly among middle-aged adults and immigrants. This study examines educational attainment, literacy skills, nativity (foreign-born vs. native-born) as predictors of MtL in living the United States. Nationally representative data between ages 40 65 years were obtained from 2012/2014 Program for International Assessment Adult Competencies (PIAAC). Structural equation models used assess validity latent construct examine associations selected determinants adults. Postsecondary education degrees higher skills linked greater MtL. However, foreign-born individuals had lower than their US-born counterparts. Educators researchers should be aware limited being an immigrant possible demoting MtL, turn, barriers lifelong learning participation
